The following are some of the key accomplishments of AFSTA:
- Developed constitution, bylaws and budget, which were adopted at the -- Inaugural Congress on March 20 - 21 in Pretoria.
- Registered the Association and established an office in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Approved membership of 57 members.
- Recruited and appointed AFSTA Staff and acquired materials and equipments.
- Developed a draft Communications Strategic Plan.
- Developed marketing documents for AFSTA.
AFSTA also established four technical committees:
- Seed legislation and harmonization, Chairman: Dr. V. Gwarazimba (Zimbabwe).
- Training and capacity building, Chairman: Mr. C. Price (Malawi).
- Seed trade and seed industry database, Chairman: Rabenasolo (Madagascar).
- PR and communications, chairman Dr. W. van der Walt (South Africa).
Organized successfully the first and the second Annual Congresses and General Assembly meetings in Cairo in March 2001 and in Dakar in March 2002 respectively.
Established recognition of AFSTA as seed industry stakeholder in Africa: invited to participate in several international meetings within and outside Africa.
Issued and widely distributed AFSTA biannual Newsletters.
Assisted in the process of harmonization of seed regulations in Sub-Saharan Africa under FAO/France Programme.
Obtained funding for budget deficit 2001 from French Government and the USDA/USAID of the US.
Conducted a training course in Agribusiness management for AFSTA members in English (in Nairobi) and in French (in Douala) in June 2002.
Implemented ATRIP (African Trade and Investment Program) project funded by USAID in six countries in Western and Central Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, and Togo)
Developed position papers on sui generis system for Protection of new plant varieties, on Modern Biotechnology, and on Sustainable development.
Interacted with regional and international bodies dealing with agricultural development to advance the causes of the African seed industry
Liaised with the other regional seed trade associations and with the International Seed Federation
AFSTA members lobbying to the public authority for the well-being of the African seed industry.
Assisted in creating National seed trade associations
Exploring opportunities to educate African seed stakeholders on IPR and Modern Biotechnology as efficient tools to improve agricultural productivity in Africa.
