COMPANY PROFILE

Objectives

Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy and although only one third of the country is arable a lot of effort is being made to improve farming in arid and semi-arid parts of the country.

The growth and development of the company since 1956 is in itself a healthy sign of the success of the national objective of self-suffiency in food. The company has hitherto consistently and adequately ensures the seed production and supply to meet the national requirements while surplus is exported to various countries of Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Kenya Seed Company is the Chief Producer and supplier of seed maize (both hybrids and ops) suitable for various ecological zones within the tropics and sub-tropical regions. Kenya Seed Company has substantial stocks of seed maize for export during 2001/2002 seasons. The varieties available are:

a) Late Maturing Maize Varieties:

Hybrids 614,625,626,627,628,629 etc. These hybrids have been in the Market for long and many farmers within African region are aware of their potential. i.e.: Tanzania and Uganda

b) Medium Late Transitional Varieties:

Hybrids 622 and 623 these varieties are suitable for lake regions and valley bottoms while outside Kenya the Southern Highlands of Tanzania and Lake Regions offer very good Climate for these hybrids.

c) Medium Altitude Varieties:

Hybrids, 511,513. These hybrids are suitable and perform very well in medium altitudes commonly referred to as coffee zones.

d) Dry Low Altitude Varieties:

Hybrids; DH01, DH02 (DLC1 and Katumani – OPS) these varieties are suitable in bio-modal rainfall zones where rainfall is not adequate. More varieties for these areas are being developed with a view of improving farming in these areas.

e) Coastal Regions Varieties:

Hybrids PH1, PH-4 (Coast composite- OP) these varieties are suitable in coastal regions where humidity is high.

Other than maize seeds the company produces diverse varieties of wheat seeds suitable for High Medium and Low altitudes.

1) High/Medium altitudes: Mbuni, Pasa, Mbega, Popo, Tembo and Kongoni.

2) Medium altitudes: Nyangumi, Fahari, Paka, Nungu and Chuiku.

3) Low altitudes: Ngamia, and Nduma.

Consequently the company produces other crop seeds.

1) Sorghum Seeds: Serena and Seredo

2) Bean Seeds: GLP2, GLP24 GLP1004 GLP92.

3) Pasture Seeds and Forage Sorghums: Boma, Elmba Rhodes, Columbus grass and Sudan grass.

4) Assorted vegetable and flower seeds through our subsidiary Simlaw Seeds.
