SEED TRADE ASSOCIATION OF MALAWI (STAM)

Seed Trade Association (STAM) is an association of Seed Producers, Processors and Distributors. STAM is a member of the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA), and was established in 2004. Its mission is to promote sustainable agribusiness in Malawi through enhanced cooperation among all seed industry players, provision of a steady stream of seed technologies (the very essence of establishing the foundation seed enterprise, FSE), protection of farmers and their future on matters of seed and the achievement of a high level of integrity in the seed industry. Among others, the principal objectives for its establishment are to:

  • Enhance communication with the Ministry of Agriculture, and Food Security on matters affecting the seed industry.
  • Contribute towards policy formulation in agriculture and economic development of Malawi in order to promote rural development.
  • Ensure consistency and reliability in the supply of quality seed to farmers.
  • Promote use of improved seeds to achieve high productivity for food and cash. The following graph explain the importance of the this last objective among others.
  • Combat fake (counterfeit) seed and illegal/sub standard seed multiplication and trading in Malawi.
  • Support government in achieving food security, self-sufficiency and export drive.
  • Promote and install efficiency and effectiveness in seed inspectorate department of MOAIFS.
  • Develop ethics for the seed industry to protect the vulnerable smallholder farmers.
  • Promote the intensification of agriculture in food production and free more land for cash crops and livestock development.
  • Protect farmers from the caprices of dishonest, unscrupulous seed dealers
